Information

In November 2006, over 300 medical students from Cardiff University agreed to take part in a First Responder Scheme to cover areas in Cardiff. This is the first scheme of its size and the only one in the UK to be manned solely by medical students. Members of the team are trained in life support and the use of defibrillators (to re-start the heart).

We act as representatives of the Ambulance Service, providing life saving treatment in the interim time between collapse and the arrival of an ambulance. With a direct line to ambulance control we respond to a variety of potentially life-threatening medical emergencies (Category A):

  • Cardiac arrests (heart attacks)
  • Chest pains believed to be of cardiac origin, and at risk of cardiac arrest
  • Patients who are unconscious for unknown reasons
  • Choking
  • Drowning (where patient is out of water)
